Sunny Choi Violin About

Sunny Choi is a classically trained violinist based in Toronto, Ontario. She is well known for her extremely passionate and strong violin performance skills. Sunny’s ability to captivate and connect with her audience has drawn wide praise and acclaim.


A native of Seoul, South Korea, Sunny's passion for music and the violin started at the young age of six and soon began honing her craft at the Yewon School, Seoul, South Korea. After relocating to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, she had the privilege of studying under great violinists such as Gerard Kantarjian, Atis Bankas, and Mayumi Seiler who led her to the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, Massachusetts.


At the New England Conservatory of Music, under the tutelage of Malcome Lowe and the late Masuko Ushioda, Sunny earned a scholarship and received both her Bachelors of Music and Masters of Music in Violin Performance degrees. After graduating, she moved to Chicago after earning a position at the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Illinois.


After relocating back to Toronto, Ontario, Sunny studied with the late Jacques Israelievitch who then recruited her to join him at York University, Toronto, Ontario as a PhD candidate and teaching assistant.


Sunny has performed in chamber music and orchestra festivals throughout North America and South Asia including the Aspen Music Festival, the Pacific Music Festival, the Centre d’Arts Orford Festival, the Killington Music Festival, and the Niagara International Music Festival. She has also had the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading artists including Riccardo Muti, Peter Oundjian, Fabio Luisi, and Joseph Silverstein. Choi has also won a variety of competitions including the Kiwanis Music Festival, the Laughton Birds Music Competition, the Korean Broadcasting Music Competition, and the York Concerto Competition.


As a featured soloist, Sunny Choi has performed with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra ‘TSYO’, North York Honors Symphony Orchestra, the York Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Concert Orchestra. She has performed as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Associate Concertmaster of the Koffler Chamber Orchestra, Second Principal of the Korean Canadian Symphony, and concertmaster of the York Symphony Orchestra. Currently, she is a member of the Toronto Concert Orchestra at Casa Loma.
